2 new additions to Proniño, 2 completely different stories…  A short story about two very different children's arrival at Foundation Proniño this month.

International Sailing Regatta, Honduras 2010

This past weekend we celebrated in Honduras and Foundation Proniño a great feat: participating in a very successful (for Honduras!) international sailing regatta hosted by the Honduran Sailing Federation.   It was incredible for two reasons: one is that our own children now compose the best sailors on the Honduran Federation Team, and the other is how much we have grown in just a year and half!

Hey Proniño Friends,

We are thrilled to announce in collaboration with a wonderful foundation known as “Living Waters for the World” that Proniño Honduras now has clean and safe water!   This project was essential to the health of our children and an incredible donation on behalf of Living Waters.   Thank you sincerely for your hard work and dedication to overcome the hurdles of the installation and get the job done.   We know have four faucets which are in each of the homes on the Las Flores main property pumping 100% purified water for the kids!

Hey All, it’s a long one, but it’s worth it I promise.

This is a blog entry I am really excited to write about.  I get a little jaded here after nearly four years, but every once in a while I get to be present for a real miracle.  I am not especially religious, nor that prone to getting sappy over things, but this weekend both reinvigorated my belief in some higher power, and proved that after all this time, this gringo can still cry.

A long drive, Lago Yojoa to San Luis, Santa Barbara, to Colinas, to San Pedro Sula, to a bus terminal, to a family reunion.

In an effort to help the children of Proniño maintain a relationship with their family, we have instituted a system of visits to the areas where they originated from.   Unlike where we typically receive incoming street children to the center, usually the street itself typically San Pedro Sula or El Progreso, the child protection agency located in San Pedro, or the family courts of El Progreso, these visits encompass a large area.   This latest trip was to Santa Barbara, a department about 3 hours northwest of El Progreso, up in the mountains.   We left with me, a visiting volunteer Gina Mortimer, and 4 kids from Proniño from the region: Oscar, Giovanni, and the two Bautista brothers Henry and Brendi, this past Sunday morning.

After finishing up a good day of sailing practice with the Proniño team we decided to use up the remaining hour of daylight by driving up the road to nearby Panacam National Park.  Bad Idea.

An Earthquake!  What a day and half our ProNino friends have had.  Click the link and read the first-hand stories and see the pictures of their experience.

"Dear Friends of Proniño,

Today at approximately 2:30am we here in Honduras were struck by a substantially large earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale and centered about 100 miles or so north of La Ceiba, east of Tela. This is an account from me (a seasoned Californian earthquake pro who was shaking in his Honduran boots!), Bas from Homeless Child, and some of the children of Proniño...."

Just a quick note to let you know that PNUSA has had a wonderfully warm response from our ProNino family as people have learned that the boys are safe.  It is wonderful to know that so many folks are standing with ProNino and the boys.  Thank you!!
